NAACP Helen Louise Kendrick Scholarship 2016

This award recognizes a Sioux City, Iowa, public school graduate who is planning to attend a two year college, four year college or university in the academic year of 2016-2017. Applicants should demonstrate exemplary leadership skills as evidence by active participation in NAACP Youth Membership, NAACP RAP (focus groups) and involvement in student or community organizations. The recipient must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 at the time of submitting the application.

Submit applications to NAACP, %Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 82, Sioux City, Iowa, 51102. This application and all supporting documents must be received and postmarked by April 1, 2016. Scholarship winner will be honored at the Senior Celebration on May 3, 2016. The scholarship will be awarded with proof of admission for fall of the 2016-2017 academic year.

Student Reference Guide 

Please submit the following documents with your application: 

Cover Letter- Provide a one (1) page summary of your qualification for this award

Leadership Resume- Provide a resume that describes all paid and/or volunteer leadership experiences. Give dates of involvement, titles, activities and accomplishments.

Essay- In an essay of 500-750 words, describe the qualities that make you a good leader. Explain why and how you have exemplified that quality in previous leadership roles. Be specific and provide examples. Essay must be typed in Times Roman 12 font.

Recommendations- Please ask three individuals for serve as references for you. Ask the individuals to write a one page reference for you and return to: NAACP Scholarship, P.O. Box 82, Sioux City, Iowa, 51102, by April 1, 2016. (Please provide them with the attached directions) Provide names of references below:

NOTE: Your application must be turned in as a packet. The application, essay and letters of reference must be turned in together. If you do not submit your complete application you will be disqualified as a candidate for the scholarship. 

  • The Helen Louise Kendrick Honoree will receive a $1000.00 scholarship
  • Second and third place honorees each will receive a $300.00 scholarship

Personal Reference Guide

Dear Reference Provider:

Thank you for your willingness to serve as a reference for a young individual. The Scholarship Committee would like to request you to use the following information as a guideline in writing your reference. The Helen Louise Kendrick Scholarship emphasizes community involvement and service in conjunction with academic achievement and student motivation.

Helen Louise Kendrick was born 1927 in Sioux City, Iowa. She lived most of her life on

Hamilton Blvd. Helen graduated from Central High School in 1945 and was one of the first women of color to graduate from Briar Cliff University in 1948. She worked as a dietician for St. Vincent Hospital and became the head dietician of St. Joseph’s Hospital for many years. Near the end of her career she worked at St. Luke’s Hospital. Helen provided consultative services to Winnebago Nation in Nebraska and various organizations. She was very active in the Hour of Pleasure Club, Eastern Star Harmony Chapter, Briar Cliff Board member, a founder and organizer of the Sioux City Black Homecoming and a lifelong member of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
